NGAr 2011 Racer Update

February 10, 2011

We sent out a race update last night. In case you did not get it, here it is.

NGAR 2011 Newsletter

Time is running out if you want to register for the North Georgia Adventure Race. As of this morning, you have just over 36 hours (deadline is midnight 11:59pm February 1) to get your team entered…so if you are thinking of racing you don’t want to delay.

The NGAR is one of the longest running single day races in the country – having been held annually since 2003. This classic is known for its brutal weather, tough conditions, and meticulous race detail. This year the course is being designed by two of adventure racing’s top racers – Peter Jolles and Jon Barker – and they have put together a course that will challenge both experienced racers and newbies.

You only have a couple days. Feb 1 is your last chance to get in…register now while you still can.

The title says it all. We’ve had a bunch of teams register this last week. At this pace, I expect we will sell out in the next couple weeks.

We have about 25 race spots or 8 team spots left as of this writing. We’ve been at about 2 per day for the last week, so get them while they last.

NGAR, Deliverance…

January 3, 2011

…do you hear banjos?

Most people don’t know this, but the move Deliverance was based on the Coosawattee River before it was dammed up to form Carters Lake.  Think about that when you are paddling in March.

Peter put together this video montage for your enjoyment:

Under 100 spots left

December 15, 2010

…just keeping you in the loop.

If you count pending teams we are around 60 spots left.

2011 NGAR Info

December 7, 2010

Wow, we’ve had a lot going on in preparation for the race. Beth, Jon, Peter and I are excited about the way the course is shaping up and wanted to share some information about the course, registration details, and race dates.

Race Date and Location

The NGAR is March 12-13, 2011.  It is hosted by the Global Retreat Center (same pre-race registration as last year) outside Ellijay. Registration is open and is open to the first 120 people – we’re accepting 2 and 3 person teams this year. Past years have sold out, so make sure you register early if you want in. We will close registration on March 1 or when we get to 120, whichever comes first. Note that registration is only available on the Checkpoint Tracker Adventure Racing site.

Course

The 90 mile, 30 hour course is being designed by Jon Barker (former captain of team CP0) and Peter Jolles (current captain of team CP0).  You can expect a professional course with lots of great scenery, single track, moving water, bushwacking, and navigation. New for this year…we’re adding a moving water segment. As part of that, we are allowing any type of boat you want to bring. Please remember that composite boats usually end up on the wrong side of a fight with low water and rocks. Practice, practice, practice.

NGAR Schedule

Friday March 11, 2011 – Pre-race registration and meeting. MyTopo maps and course directions delivered when you check in.

Saturday March 12, 2011 – 9am Race start. Location TBA (we know, we’re just not telling).

Sunday March 13, 2011 – 3pm Race finish. Location TBA (we know, we’re just not telling).

Bonus…course photos:

Well…the 2010 NGAR is complete. What can I say? It was brutal, the weather was as it always seems to be for our races – miserable. I’d like just once for us to have a sunny, beautiful day!

Congrats to all the teams who persevered through what is a beautiful area. Big congrats to Enduraventure for winning the race and keeping the top spot on the podium close to home. Thanks to everyone who came out and raced, volunteered, and helped throughout the year as we planned for this race.

I’m already thinking about 2011. The site has been updated with 2011 information – we’re going to be doing some small things differently (like only allow 30 teams, and provide boats)  but mostly the NGAR will stay as it always is. We’re not fluff folks here – if we get sponsors that is great but mostly we’re just a grassroots, keep it simple type of race where we try to make everything about the course and about the racers…and of course about the greater good.  I’ll post our totals once we figure out how much was raised for the Eagle Ranch Christian Childrens Home once we have all the accounting number crunching done.

Thanks again for supporting us – we’re closing the books on the 2010 race and looking forward to 2011!

For teams form Atlanta or flying into Atlanta looking for a canoe to rent, this is a great deal. Just got off the phone with Barbara from shootthehooch.com in Roswell, GA. She is offering Old Town 169s for the race for $60. You’ll need to drive to her location and pick up the boats, but still a great deal. You can reach her by cell (they are closed now) at 404-274-6912.

Addition to the Gear List

December 2, 2009

We’ve added a waterproof dry bag that will hold all gear as mandatory gear for the paddle section. This is for safety in case you flip your boat – we want to make sure you have dry stuff to put on.
